Thurston Howell III Thursday: Big Man on a Little Stick (S1E21)

(Originally aired Feb 20, 1965)

There are two kinds of people in this world:

  1. those who see a surfer and think, “Wow… that looks fun.” 🏄‍♂️
  2. and those who see a surfer and think, “Excellent… a floating Uber.” 😏

In “Big Man on a Little Stick,” the castaways meet Duke, a real-life surf legend who could absolutely be their ticket off the island. The problem?

The second he arrives, the island’s survival plan becomes… a beauty pageant. 💅🌴

Instead of focusing on the “rescue mission” part, jealousy starts dripping into the sand like warm soda. People get possessive. People get selfish. And Duke’s attention floats away from the goal and straight toward Ginger + Mary Ann like a coconut rolling downhill.

And here’s the Thurston takeaway, my fellow beach philosophers:

🎩 Thurston’s Lesson of the Week

When the group needs teamwork, personal desire turns the steering wheel into a carnival ride.
Jealousy doesn’t just ruin moods… it reroutes the whole mission.

Rescue is a team sport.
Lust is a solo hobby. 😏

🏖️ Beach Tag Wisdom:
If your plan depends on one “big hero”… protect the plan from human nonsense.

Island Question:
Ever seen a perfectly good group plan get hijacked by ego, jealousy, or romance drama? Tell me your best story. 😈
