Thurston Howell III Thursday: Waiting for Watubi (Season 1, Episode 10) and Shore Superstitions

If you’ve ever watched the classic Gilligan’s Island episode “Waiting for Watubi,” you know it’s all about the quirky superstitions that pop up even on a deserted island. Every castaway suddenly believes in signs, symbols, curses, rituals, and the mysterious power of Watubi –  because when you’re far from home, the mind does funny things.

But guess what?

We don’t need to be stranded on an island to get superstitious.
We’ve got our own down-the-shore rituals right here on the mainland.

Maybe for you it’s:

  • stopping at Wawa for hoagies and ice before you cross the bridge
  • hitting your must-visit surf shop the moment you arrive
  • parking in the same spot every year “for luck”
  • walking to the water before unloading the car
  • touching the ocean on Day 1, no matter the weather
  • grabbing a hermit crab from the same shop every summer

The castaways had the Watubi spirit.
We have Wawa rituals, beach bag talismans, and surf-shop traditions.

It’s all part of the magic.

Because going “down the shore” isn’t just geography –
it’s a state of mind.
One woven with nostalgia, small rituals, and those quirky superstitions that make every trip feel blessed by the beach gods.

Now it’s your turn.

👇 In the comments below, tell us YOUR down-the-shore superstitions.
