Sandy Hook doesn’t really throw itself at you.
It waits.
Then somewhere between the wildlife, the history, the dunes, and the skyline…
it sneaks up on you.
So before you pack up the chairs, shake the sand out of your shoes, and leave the peninsula behind…
here are ten things worth doing before Sandy Hook says goodbye.
10. Look across the bay at the Manhattan skyline
It’s one of the Shore’s weirdest little moments.
You’re sitting on a beach towel.
Eating snacks.
Watching waves.
And over there?
Millions of people are sitting in meetings.
Life is strange.
9. Visit the Sandy Hook Lighthouse
Built in 1764.
Still standing.
Still working.
Still outperforming modern phone batteries.
Respect.
8. Walk through Fort Hancock
Old buildings.
Military history.
Huge empty spaces.
Tiny voice in your brain saying:
“This would be an amazing hide-and-seek location.”
7. Keep an eye out for foxes
Not kidding.
Seeing a fox wandering around the dunes creates immediate main-character energy.
6. Search for harbor seals on the bay side
The official rule is simple:
If somebody whispers:
“Look…seal…”
Everybody looks.
Immediately.
5. Walk through the holly forest
Because at some point Sandy Hook casually says:
“Oh yeah…we also have a magical little forest.”
Like that’s normal.
4. Put your phone away for fifteen minutes
No scrolling.
No notifications.
Just waves and wind.
Sandy Hook rewards this sort of thing.
3. Choose your side in the Great Sandy Hook Debate
Ocean side?
Or bay side?
Big surf energy?
Or calm-water lounging?
Choose carefully.
You may be asked to defend your position later.
2. Double-check the beach access signs
We’re simply going to leave this one right here.
Read carefully.
Proceed thoughtfully.
π
1. Sit quietly and listen
The waves.
The wind.
The birds.
The distant boats.
The strange little feeling that you’re somehow very far away and very close to everything at the same time.
Maybe that’s Sandy Hook’s secret…
Maybe it exists because every once in a while we need places that don’t shout for our attention.
Places that simply sit beside the water and wait for us to notice them. π¦π¦π½β¨
